My Car Is Making a Whining Noise

A whine from your car usually means something is spinning under stress. Whether it's harmless or urgent depends on where it's coming from.

Whining noises typically originate from rotating components. The most common sources are the power steering pump (whines when turning), alternator (whines with RPM, often with a failing bearing), transmission (whines under load or at certain speeds), and serpentine belt or tensioner (whines or squeals at startup or during acceleration). A differential on rear-wheel-drive or AWD vehicles can also whine when its fluid is low or its gears are wearing. Supercharged engines whine by design, but that's a feature, not a bug.

Isolation technique: start the car and rev the engine in park. If the whine follows RPM, it's engine-driven — belt accessories, alternator, or power steering pump. If the whine only appears while moving, it's speed-related — transmission, differential, or wheel bearing. Turning the steering wheel at idle provokes the power steering pump. Removing the serpentine belt briefly and running the engine (just for a few seconds) can isolate whether the whine comes from the belt-driven accessories or the engine itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a bad serpentine belt cause whining?

Yes — a worn, glazed, or misaligned serpentine belt can whine or squeal, especially at startup or under accessory load like A/C.

Is a whining transmission serious?

It can be. Low or dirty transmission fluid is an easy fix, but internal bearing wear means more involved repair. Don't ignore it.
