How Often to Change Oil
The old 3,000-mile rule is outdated for most cars. Modern oils and engines have changed the math — but not all the same way.
How often you need an oil change depends on your engine, the oil you use, and how you drive. Most modern vehicles running full synthetic oil can safely go 7,500-10,000 miles between changes — check your owner's manual for the manufacturer's recommendation. Conventional oil should be changed every 3,000-5,000 miles. Synthetic blend falls in between at 5,000-7,500 miles. Your car's oil life monitor (if it has one) factors in driving conditions and is generally reliable.
Driving conditions matter. Short trips where the engine never fully warms up are harder on oil than highway cruising. Stop-and-go city traffic, dusty environments, towing, and extreme heat (hello, Jacksonville summers) all qualify as "severe service" and shorten the interval. If most of your driving is short trips under 10 miles in Florida heat, lean toward the shorter end of your manufacturer's range. Also, some engines are harder on oil than others — turbocharged engines and direct-injection engines tend to contaminate oil faster.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it bad to change oil too often?
It won't hurt the engine — it's just unnecessary spending. Follow your manufacturer's recommended interval with the appropriate oil type.
Should I use synthetic or conventional oil?
Check your owner's manual. Many modern engines require synthetic. If yours doesn't, synthetic still offers better protection and longer intervals.
